Dark post

A dark post is an ad that never shows up on your company's Facebook Page or Instagram profile. Only the people you pay to reach see it as they scroll, though it can still appear in the ads library. Most paid social ads today are dark posts by default.

What a dark post is

The name sounds shadier than the mechanic. When you build an ad in the ads manager instead of publishing a post, you get an ad without cluttering your profile with forty near-identical variants. Followers who open your Page see the organic posts you chose. People in the target audience see the ad in feed.

Let's take a drink brand as an example. They sell a low-sugar sports drink for active women over 50, mostly from their own website. The drink brand buys ads on Meta, TikTok, and YouTube. A creative test of 12 user-generated content (UGC) openings, $500 each, is $6,000 of dark posts. The Instagram grid that week still had two organic posts. The Ad Library had all twelve ads.

Why advertisers use dark posts

Volume, mostly. Serious creative testing (running variants against each other so you learn which idea works) means dozens of live variants at once. Publishing all of them would turn a brand profile into a spam wall and confuse the organic audience.

Dark posts also let you talk differently to different segments. A prospecting message (for people who do not know you) and a win-back message (for people who bought once and stopped) can run at the same time without contradicting each other on the public grid. Let's take a drink brand as an example. They sell a low-sugar sports drink for active women over 50, mostly from their own website. The drink brand can tell new viewers about the $36 pouch and tell past buyers about a refill bundle, in the same week, without the profile arguing with itself.

Dark posts and social proof

Engagement lands on the dark post, not on a Page post, so each new variant starts from zero comments. Teams work around this by consolidating on one post ID, or by running Spark Ads (TikTok ads that boost a real post and keep its likes) and partnership ads (ads that serve from a creator's handle) where the post carries its own history.

Common dark post mistakes

Writing copy you would not want screenshotted is the one that ages badly, because the ad library exists. The quieter one is duplicating a dark post instead of reusing its post ID. You lose the comments, and frequency (how many times the same person sees the ad) can climb on a fresh ID while the old social proof sits on a dead variant.

  • Writing copy you would not want screenshotted, because the ad library exists.
  • Losing accumulated comments by duplicating creative instead of reusing a post ID, then wondering why frequency climbed and results did not.
  • Leaving unpublished tests running with nobody moderating the comments.
