Connect GTM to n8n

  • Can it run every morning?

Build n8n workflows that use your GTM data to find what a new version changed on a schedule, and post the result where your team works. Lemonado connects them in about 5 minutes with one Lemonado token.

Why connect GTM to n8n?

n8n runs on triggers and schedules, so a question you ask once can become a check that runs every morning. Connected through Lemonado, it reads your GTM tags, triggers, variables and versions, so it can find what a new version changed with today's numbers.

  • All your GTM data

Accounts, containers and workspaces, ready to ask about.

  • Always today's numbers

Triggers and the conditions behind them, synced from GTM automatically, so answers use today's numbers.

  • Connect all your tools

Questions like "Why did conversions drop?" use GTM and GA4, Google Ads at once.

How to connect GTM to n8n

Before you start

  • A Google Tag Manager account you can sign in to
  • n8n installed
  • A Lemonado account (the free trial works)
  1. 1

Connect Google Tag Manager in Lemonado

In Lemonado, open Connectors, find Google Tag Manager and sign in. Sign in with a Google account that has at least Read access to the GTM containers you want to audit. Pick the web container your site uses.

  2. 2

    Turn on external access

In the company's settings, open External tools, turn the connection on, choose which sources it can reach and copy the server URL.

    https://mcp.lemonado.io/mcp
  3. 3

    Create a token in Lemonado

In External tools, open your connection's guide, choose n8n, pick an expiry and click Generate Token. Copy it.

  4. 4

    Add the MCP Client Tool

In your workflow, add an AI Agent node, then add an MCP Client Tool under its tools. Use node version 1.1 or later; version 1 only speaks SSE.

  5. 5

    Configure it

Set the endpoint to the server URL, the transport to HTTP Streamable (pick it yourself on node version 1.1, which defaults to SSE) and authentication to Bearer Auth. Create a Bearer Auth credential and paste the raw token, without a "Bearer " prefix.

    https://mcp.lemonado.io/mcp
  6. 6

    Test and save

Test the connection, save the workflow and ask the agent about your data.

  7. 7

    Ask n8n about GTM

Try "Every morning at 8, check yesterday's GTM numbers and post anything unusual to #marketing." Or ask: "What changed in GTM today?" or "Weekly container clean-up list"

Good to know

  • If the MCP Client Tool only shows an SSE Endpoint field, it's the version 1 node: replace it with a newer one. Keep the /mcp URL and choose HTTP Streamable.
  • Regenerating a token in Lemonado invalidates the old one, so update n8n when you do.

What can n8n do with GTM?

n8n's AI Agent reads your GTM data on a trigger or a schedule, then posts, logs or files the result in the next node.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, through Lemonado. Connect your GTM account and container in Lemonado, add Lemonado as an MCP Client Tool on an n8n AI Agent node, and n8n can find what a new version changed with your live data.

No, Google doesn't run one. Community servers exist, and most can edit and publish your container, so check what you grant them. Lemonado gives n8n read-only access to your containers, next to GA4 and your ad platforms.

Use Test step on the MCP Client Tool. A 401 means the token expired or was regenerated, so paste a new one into the Bearer credential. In Lemonado, check that Google Tag Manager is connected and External tools is on for the company. If a container is missing, your Google user needs access to it in Tag Manager > Admin > User Management. Account access alone isn't always enough.

Yes, if both are connected in Lemonado. One connection reaches every source you allow, so you can ask things like "Google Ads conversions fell on Oct 18. Check which GTM version was published that week and what it changed."

MCP is included in Lemonado's paid plans and in the free trial, so you can try it before you pay.
